Seems that today, Black Friday, the day traditionally devoted to shopping, is experiencing a backlash.

REI  has closed its doors on Black Friday for the past few years. Online orders are closed as well, giving employees a long weekend with family and friends. This is to stay in line with their vision as an outdoor retailer.

Shopping can be so many things. A necessity. A pastime. A sport. A passion.

There’s no right or wrong attitude, but it is certain that whatever attitude we take towards shopping was probably formed early on. Writing about how we feel around purchasing – that hunter, gatherer instinct – is an interesting way to see our how values and attitudes have shaped us.

Exercise: Take some quiet time at the end of the day to write about your Black Friday. How did you spend it this year? Was it different, or the same as previous years? Did you snag a bargain, decide to sleep in, gorge on leftovers, or take a hike? Write about how the experience felt.
