Learning to love yourself is the beginning of a lifelong romance. – Oscar Wilde
In the movie The Runaway Bride, Julia Roberts plays Maggie, a woman who deserts several suitors at the altar. Wanting to please each potential mate, Maggie tries to adapt to their interests.
The tactic doesn’t seem to work – after a series of failed relationships, Maggie realizes that she doesn’t even know how she likes her eggs cooked! One fellow liked fried, the other scrambled, a third poached on toast – and so she did, too.
It was only after getting off by herself for a while that Maggie realizes no one else can define our tastes for us. We all get to sample life for ourselves.
Exercise: Title a blank page in your journal, ‘Today I Chose, and Why.” Write about your day, starting at when you woke up. How many of your daily choices are defined by you? How many by someone else?
